From the Press Release:
Usually more visible along the coast of the Mediterranean or the Baltic, legendary band Tuxedomoon will be making a rare appearance stateside in New York City for one show only at Le Poisson Rouge - a brand new multimedia art cabaret founded on the former site of the historic Village Gate.
Don't expect to see them repeat poses from their youth as Tuxedomoon seldom look back and, if so, more often than not, choose to refine and distort their past in terms concurrent with their muses of the moment. No room for '80s nostalgia here, their recent compositions feature a wide and surprising variety of styles, influences and themes gathered along their varied journey through space and time. Appearances of Tuxedomoon in the USA are unusual occurrences, there having been only 4 others in the last 21 years.
If you're in that part of the world, come witness this unique event.

RASTER-NOTON SHOWCASE tonight in Cambridge, Massachusetts
from the e-mail:
**Thursday, May 15, 2008**
Non-Event, Basstown, and the Goethe-Institüt Boston present
RASTER-NOTON SHOWCASE
with SIGNAL + solo sets by
ALVA NOTO, FRANK BRETSCHNEIDER, and BYETONE
Middlesex Lounge
315 Massachusetts Avenue
Cambridge, MA
(617) 868-MSEX
Doors: 9pm, Show: 10pm
21+ / Admission: $10
SIGNAL is a Raster-Noton supergroup, featuring Carsten Nicolai
(aka Alva Noto), Olaf Bender (aka Byetone), and Frank Bretschneider.
The trio performs intense, hypnotic music to a spectacular backdrop
of graphical information that reveals the complex geometry of the
sounds in play. Most of their sound sources are taken from a huge
memory bank of music from long jamming sessions dating from the early
days of Raster-Noton. These are processed and folded into a taut
and energetic web of rhythmic clicks, bristling static,
and deep bass pulses that are unexpectedly sensuous and undeniably
funky. Their most recent album, Robotron, was released in 2007 on
Raster-Noton. This will be SIGNAL's Boston debut.

Musician and visual artist CARSTEN NICOLAI (aka ALVA NOTO) works
in the transitional area between art and science. In his intensely
dynamic work, Nicolai plays with the rules of physicality. Clicks
and glitches are not used as ornamental additions, but make up the
essential elements of the work, which is often structured around
the rhythmic grooves of hip-hop and R&B. Nicolai has performed in
many of the world's most prestigious spaces including The Guggenheim,
MOMA SF, MOMA Oxford, NTT Tokyo, Tate Modern, and Venice Biennial.
His latest album, unitxt, will be out this summer on Raster-Noton.
This will be Nicolai's Boston debut. Website: http://www.alvanoto.com
FRANK BRETSCHNEIDER is a founding member of Raster-Noton and one
of the pioneering figures in ultra minimal post techno. Using the
most basic sound sources (sine waves and white noise), Bretschneider
creates minimal, flowing pieces with delicate textures and complex
rhythmic patterns. Described as "abstract analogue pointilism,"
"ambience for spaceports," and "hypnotic echochamber pulsebeat,"
Bretschneider's subtle and detailed music is echoed by his visuals:
perfect translations of the qualities found in music into visual
phenomena. His most recent album, Rhythm, was named one of The Wire
magazine's Top 50 Records of 2007. Website: http://www.frankbretschneider.de

OLAF BENDER (aka BYETONE) is a founding member of the Raster-Noton
label, as well as its lead designer. Bender creates his music digitally,
assembling sine tones into complex sound fabrics of deep sub-bass
and rhythmic clicks and crackles. He creates abstract animations to
support his abstract music —transforming the rhythm of the music into
a graphic equivalent, which he controls in real time. His new album,
D.O.A.T. (Death of a Typographer), is due out this summer on Raster-Noton.

BIO:
Performing and recording since 2003, James Blackshaw's name is frequently mentioned alongside the likes of Jack Rose, Steffen Basho-Junghans, Sir Richard Bishop and Glenn Jones as one of the most foremost modern pioneers of solo acoustic guitar music. Now at the age of 25, Blackshaw, an untrained musician born and still residing in the suburban environs of Greater London, draws as much inspiration from early religious music, South-Asian folk music and composers such as Arvo Part, Simeon Ten Holt, Steve Reich and Charlemagne Palestine as he does from John Fahey, Robbie Basho and the early Takoma Records roster, constantly breaking boundaries in what could be conceived as a somewhat limited medium. In his part improvised and part written songs, Blackshaw makes expert use of Eastern and Western scales, chord changes reminiscent of European classical music and incredibly intricate fingerpicking patterns to make a sound that is both challengingly minimalistic, yet warm and approachable to anybody who might hear it, with a rare sensitivity that conveys both immense beauty, hope and sadness.
"In recent months, 24-year-old UK guitarist James Blackshaw has burst fully-formed onto the folk underground, his remarkable talents already seeming at peak maturity... Blackshaw has established himself as an instrumentalist of astonishing grace and delicacy, seeming as though he's gobbled and digested whole the primitive folk canons of Takoma and Vanguard. Relying primarily on 12-string guitar, Blackshaw's intricate creations web together Robbie Basho's wayfaring mysticism, Ben Chasny's soft-focu sed acid tongues, and the rustic fantasias of Sandy Bull... Blackshaw is able to differentiate himself through his exotic lyricism, stray pan-ethnic flourishes and pure unmasked virtuosity." - Pitchfork

Running about in the Rain (Electrelane in Boston)

The strangely perverse weather we've been having in Boston lately -- 50F temperatures, darkness mid-afternoon, thundershowers, and tornado warnings in the Western part of the state-- did not stop me from attending last night's concert at the Paradise. Electrelane was excellent from start to finish. I do enjoy the album despite the fact that it has received lukewarm reviews in some places. Admittedly, it is hard to reconcile the merits of their first album, Rock It to the Moon, with the Gang of Four-style pop that's on the new disc, "No Shouts, No Calls". The set last night dispensed with the first couple tracks off the new album immediately and then followed with a good mix of newer tracks and cuts off the first disc.

PAN SONIC in Boston this Thursday!

$10.00 at the door. 18+
Non-Event is proud to present the first Boston appearance in many
years by legendary electronica outfit Pan Sonic - the duo of Mika
Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen - who are making a rare and brief US tour
this September.
"There is no theory for PAN SONIC. We have no plan. We just make the
music." - Mika Vainio
Finnish minimalist techno group Pan sonic are among the most active
and well-known artists from that country's tiny experimental techno
underground, and the first to reach acclaim at an international level.
Pursuing the jagged edges of minimal techno and hardcore, the group
have earned an enduring association with industrial and noise music
through their incorporation of antiseptic production techniques and
power-tool electronics, landing them in 1995 on the English Mute
label's experimental subsidiary Blast First! (most of their catalog to
date has since appeared there). The affinity lay more at the surface,
however, as Pan sonic are better understood as a collision between
Jeff Mills and Mike Ink; dance-based electronic music with a maximum
of impact, realized through a minimum of extraneous detail. Known for
junking together studio equipment from spare parts and ancient analog
debris, Pan sonic's search for the untried in techno is their
compositional M.O., placing them closer to the music's Detroit roots
than is often understood.
"[Pan Sonic are] the only band taking our idea further" - Alan Vega of
Suicide

Modeselektor tour starts May 3!
From the bpitch control e-mail:
As you might have heard already, Modeselektor will go on their first world tour starting on May 3!
They will touch base in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, then go over to Australia (Melbourne and Sydney) and after that take off to the U.S. First stop San Francisco where they will not perform yet but get into a truck and chuck along to Missoula - their first gig on the American soil. After that it's Seattle, San Francisco, New York and Boston. They will then cross the border to chill with the Canadians and rock Quebec and Toronto. Back to the states, to Detroit this time. In "Motor City" Modeselektor will attend a techno barbecue (wow!) and roast some Berlin sausages - hmm, yummy, home sweet home! With full bellies on to Cleveland and some rave party there. And, last but not least, with combed hair and polished shoes, the guys will play at Mutek/Montréal, their last show on this tour.
We hope that you and/or your friends, buddies, parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and whoever wants to, can join them!

Yann Tiersen - 'Les Retrouvailles'
'les Retrouvailles' is Yann Tiersen's first completely new album since 'Le Phare'. The album is due out this week in France. I believe a domestic release in North America is due to follow in July 2005. This leads me to hope for a few concerts hopefully in Canada if not USA. Based on the brief sound samples on the Labels website, this disc will have a fuller, more guitar-oriented sound. Needless to say, I am extremely excited about this. Look for a full review on this website in the coming weeks.

From the Labels website:
