The new July Skies CD has just been released and is a 19 track album that collects together a US radio session broadcast in 2003; tracks from the ep 'At The Height of Summer'; 9 new tracks many intended for 'The English Cold' CD; 2 epic45 reworkings and a live track from the first ever July Skies performance at the ICA in London in 2002. Artwork for the 8 page booklet has once more been carefully prepared by Martin Andersen of Andersen M Studio in keeping with the previous two albums.

I'm back in town - on the air tonight!

Finally, for those of you who have been waiting-- after a three week absence from the airwaves, I'll be on the air tonight from 7-10pm EST on WZBC. Nothing too excessive tonight, just a lot of good songs.

Venice Film Festival - premieres

the CBC reports:

"the festival's opening film, Black Dahlia, features Canadian actress Mia Kershner in the title role. Brian DePalma directed the highly anticipated film, based on crime writer James Ellroy's novel of the same name. It stars Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Swank and Josh Hartnett.

Another potential North American blockbuster is Allen Coulter's Hollywoodland, starring Adrien Brody and Ben Affleck, which dramatizes the investigation into the death of George Reeves, star of the 1950s TV show Adventures in Superman.

Other high-profile competitors for the top prize include Alfonso Cuaron's Children of Men, starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine; Emilio Estevez's Bobby with Sharon Stone, Anthony Hopkins and Demi Moore, a movie about the assassination of the U.S. politician Robert Kennedy; Stephen Frear's The Queen, with Helen Mirren, James Cromwell and Michael Sheen and Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain, with Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz.

The other films in the competition include:

* Alain Resnais's Private Fears in Public Places, with Lambert Wilson and Sabine Azema.
* Two Italian films, La stella che non c'e, by Gianni Amelio and Nuovomondo (The Golden Door), by Emanuele Crialese.
* Zwartboek, a Dutch film by Basic Instinct director Paul Verhoeven.
* Two Japanese films, Paprika, an animated film by Satoshi Kon and Mushi-shi, by Katsuhiro Otomo.
* Fallen, by Barbara Albert from Austria.
* Daratt, by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, the first film to enter the festival from the African nation of Chad.
* L'Intouchable, a French film by Benoit Jacquot.

The festival will also feature promising films screening outside the competition, including Kenneth Branagh's The Magic Flute, with Joseph Kaiser and Amy Carson, and David Lynch's Inland Empire, with Laura Dern and Jeremy Irons."

Tonight - Special on Tuxedomoon on WZBC

My friend James Kraus is starting tonight an hour early at 6pm EST to play live and rare Tuxedomoon. I'll be back on the air next week.

Modeselektor tour starts May 3!

As you might have heard already, Modeselektor will go on their first world tour starting on May 3!
They will touch base in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, then go over to Australia (Melbourne and Sydney) and after that take off to the U.S. First stop San Francisco where they will not perform yet but get into a truck and chuck along to Missoula - their first gig on the American soil. After that it's Seattle, San Francisco, New York and Boston. They will then cross the border to chill with the Canadians and rock Quebec and Toronto. Back to the states, to Detroit this time. In "Motor City" Modeselektor will attend a techno barbecue (wow!) and roast some Berlin sausages - hmm, yummy, home sweet home! With full bellies on to Cleveland and some rave party there. And, last but not least, with combed hair and polished shoes, the guys will play at Mutek/Montréal, their last show on this tour.

We hope that you and/or your friends, buddies, parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and whoever wants to, can join them!

Recent European Films

The films I saw at the HFA series of New European film were:

Les Amants Reguliers (Regular Lovers), directed by Philippe Garrel. This film, shot it somewhat grainy black and white, returns to the events of May 68 as experienced by a young poet (played by the director's son). The first half of the film is of the riots themselves, while the second part is largely about their aftermath. It is the second half that some critics have seen as connecting with Jean Eustache's "the Mother and the Whore". Garrel's film certainly deals with a lot of the same issues as Eustache's film, namely: now that the battle is over, has the revolution failed? Can we rescuscitate the jubiliant spirit before the revolution (note: also a title of a Bernardo Bertolucci film, which is explicitly referenced in Les Amants Reguliers.)? What will become of us in the aftermath of a true revolutionary act? and so on... Life never returns to normal for those who participate in the riots. The poet has an affair with a female sculptor, who later leaves him to pursue her career. Finally, the poet is unable to adjust and takes the only possible course left to him.

The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, Directed by Cristi Puiu. This is a new Romanian film about the last hours of an alcoholic engineer who phones an ambulance complaining of head and stomach trouble. This begins the saga of his experience from hospital to hospital attempting to get aid. The only person who advocates his position, as he drifts further and further out of consciousness is a paramedic, who pleads with doctors and technicians to help him. The whole film is shot in color at night with a handheld camera, it allows the audience to become intimately involved with the whole process as he is transported to four hospitals in one night before finally coming to his resting place. What is amazing about this film is how accurately it critiques the modern medical establishment. Under the circumstances presented in the film, it could have taken place in any industrialized city centre. It is a very grim journey that should be seen by as many people as possible in order to acquaint them with the daily struggles of medical institutions.

Nam June Paik passed away at his Miami home at 8:00pm EST on Sunday, January 29, 2006.

Comic Creatory Birthdays: Leji Matsumoto and Mattotti

Yesterday was Italian comic artist mattotti's birthday. Some of his work is available in english here.

Today is Japanese anime legend, leji matsumoto's birthday. He is the creator of the excellent Galaxy Express 999 series as well as Star Blazers. His Galaxy Express 999 (background info site) film inspired artist Takashi Murakami in the early 80s to change his style of painting. Some of his recent work reached a slightly different audience when he made the Interstella 555 film for Daft Punk.

Good work from two of my favorite artists.

The Drift by Scott Walker

I know this is going around already, however, it is exciting news--

4AD is delighted to announce that Scott Walker has completed work on his first album for the label.
The long-awaited new album - called "The Drift" - will be Scott's first since the ground-breaking "Tilt" was released in 1995.
4AD will release the album worldwide in May. The exact date will be announced shortly.

A documentary film about Scott's music - including the making of "The Drift"- is being made by the New York-based director Stephen Kijak. Titled "30 Century Man", it will also be released in 2006.
